Field Trip, February 2026

n February 2026, we traveled through the Territory of the Red Atacama Peoples, listening to stories about water and salt… to rituals and calendars… to memories, songs of the river and sky, and words in Kunza… to the struggles against lithium mining told by those living them. This journey advanced both the physical construction of El Santuario del Agua and the eponymous publication documenting its construction (published by Archive Books in July 2026).

Thank you for coming with us, Andrei Fernandez, Celeste Valero and Álvaro Simón Padrós. Our deepest gratitude to all who welcomed us and shared their wisdom. Thanks to: Tomás Vilca, Juan Carmelo Ramírez Rodríguez, Robert Maizares, Calixto Flores, and Jimena Cruz Mamani in San Pedro de Atacama; Crisóstomo Esquivel, Eusebia Esquivel, and Ismael Saire Callpanchay in Quetena Grande; Diego Condori in Uyuni; and Freddy Tarcaya Gallardo in Tupiza.

“Our community, our elders, have possessed since ancient times the knowledge of observing the cosmos, how it moves throughout the year, how it rotates...”—Juan Carmelo Ramírez, February 2026
